TPMS The Facts.

Research shows that a new tyre can leak between 3 - 8psi over the space of a year which results in a 2% increase in fuel consumption and a 25% reduction in tyre life.

The E.U estimates that an under-inflated tyre is globally responsible for.

  • 200 Million prematurely worn tyres
  • 20 Million litres of wasted fuel
  • 2 million tons of CO2 emissions
  • 40% of accidents involving injury
  • 9% of accidents involving death

TPMS How It Works.

On the majority of vehicles the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System uses a combined valve and pressure sensor inside the wheel, which keeps a constant check on conditions such as pressure, Sensor battery life and temperature, on detecting a problem with any of these the sensor sends a signal to the cars ECU which in turn alerts the driver via the dashboard. Having TPMS on modern vehicles improves the safety for everyone by keeping a check on the pressure of the vehicles tyres every few seconds not only does this save you fuel but it also prolongs the life of your tyres and not to mention alerting the driver to the possibility of a hazardous situation.

Why It Needs Servicing.

New sensors can be expensive if they need to be replaced, in theory a sensor should last for years but due to vibration, corrosion and incorrect use, damage to the sensors valve stem, core and rubber grommet can occur but here at Maxi Tyres we can service or replace these key parts that helps maintain the air tight seal between wheel and sensor.

Why Replace The Sensors.

The life of a sensor should last around 5 years or 100.000 miles although this can vary depending on the manufacturer, high mileage use and frequent low pressure alerts.
The valve sensor is also vulnerable to damage and corrosion given it location on the wheel all of which could mean they need replacing sooner than expected. Here at Maxi tyres we offers competitive prices for servicing or replacing any damaged parts.

TPMS Legislation.

While tyre pressure monitoring technology or (TPMS) as its more commonly known has been around for many years its only since the 1st November 2012 that all new-type vehicles will be required by EU law to have a pressure based tyre pressure monitoring system installed and as of January 2015 all newly registered cars from January 1st 2012 will fail its yearly MOT if the (TPMS) warning light is lit.
